Collection

The Doris McCarthy Gallery researches, acquires, stewards, and activates a collection of approximately 2000 works of contemporary art, and two archival fonds. These Collections support the DMG's vision to preserve and ensure access to works by important Canadian and international artists, while stimulating conversations about the formal and perceptual boundaries of contemporary art practice.

Collecting is primarily focused on works created by artists who have significant roots, past or present, in Scarborough, or whose works reflect the cultural landscape of the eastern GTA. The DMG acquires socially engaged works that connect global issues with local concerns to build and enrich relationships between Indigenous, Inuit, Métis, and Diasporic artistic communities. The Collection is a resource for research, a contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage, and in many cases, the ongoing telling and interpretation of Scarborough's rich and varied stories.
